Ruga community is a village located close to the Abuja city gate along airport road, behind the National Park. This community with over 6,000 inhabitants is living typically poor in an unorganized Squatter, bamboo settlements, most of the residents are categorized as victims of the Boko Haram insurgency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states. Ruga community has no permanent buildings as most of the structures are temporary and makeshift structures put together by the residents for the purpose of temporary living. There is also no single provision of basic infrastructures for the area since the area is not captured on the Abuja master plan as a residential area.
However, on the 4th-January-2019, Mirian Pat Foundation set up a community school for the children living in Ruga community due to the absence of education and high level of illiteracy in the community. Nevertheless, the Foundation chose to tackle this rate of illiteracy by training the younger ones in school. Thus, about 300 children were enrolled in school which exceeds the capacity of the school structure, Mirian Pat Foundation plans to expand the school structure and add more infrastructures along side with learning materials and send more 300 children back to school through our BACK-TO-SCHOOL Project before the end of the year 2019.
Meanwhile, on the 27th of May, 2019 Mirian Pat Foundation and her partners set off on a tour to visit the children in Mirian Pat Foundation school at Ruga community, in line with the celebration of children’s day in Nigeria. However, the children were celebrated in a grand style by the foundation, where the children where showered with so much love and presents which includes; drinks, biscuits, books and confectionery by the Mirian Pat Foundation and her partners. The children were overwhelmed with joy as it was their first time to experience children’s day because, no one has ever celebrated them before in their entire life. Moreover, during the celebration some of the children came out with a breath taken speech, followed by melodious poems as a gratitude to the foundation and her partners.

Mirian foundation, being astonished by the children’s wonderful performance, and the turn up in population in school recommended the children’s effort because, during her last visit none of the children in ruga community can read nor write, which is a huge achievement for the foundation in creating a conducive and literate society for a better future.
